Microsoft slates Windows 8 'release preview' for early June

Microsoft's top Windows executive today said that the company will ship an almost-complete version of Windows 8 the first week of June.
Stephen Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live division, announced the timing Tuesday at a developers event in Tokyo, according to a Twitter message by the company.
Windows 8Although Microsoft has traditionally dubbed such milestones "release candidate," or RC, to describe nearly-finished software, the Windows 8 build will be labeled "Release Preview," a nod to the naming of the earlier editions, Developer Preview and Consumer Preview.
Microsoft shipped Windows 8 Consumer Preview on Feb. 29.

The early June timeframe is in sync with earlier speculation, including claims made last month by a Dutch blog, and with a mock schedule laid out by Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft.
In March, Cherry said that Microsoft would deliver a release candidate three months after the Consumer Preview, with a "release to manufacturing," or RTM, edition three months after the RC.
According to Cherry's calendar, Microsoft had to deliver Windows 8 RC by the end of May and RTM by the end of August. RTM is the more important of the two yardsticks, as it notes the point at which code is offered to device manufacturers for prepping new PCs, to third-party developers for final testing of application compatibility and to peripheral vendors priming hardware designed for the OS.
Microsoft will need to accelerate Windows 8's timetable to make the late October launch date most experts believe is in the cards. But the early June debut of the Release Preview means Windows 8 remains about four weeks behind the pace of Windows 7.
In 2009, Windows 7 reached RC in early May and made RTM in late July before launching Oct. 22.
To make the crucial holiday sales season, Microsoft would have to offer Windows 8 no later than the end of October. Missing the mark would put Windows 8 at risk of repeating the problem-plagued Windows Vista, which got off to a bad start when it fell behind schedule and didn't ship until January 2007.
Vista is now generally regarded as one of Microsoft's rare operating system failures.
Microsoft has not disclosed an on-sale date for Windows 8 or discussed pricing, but last week it did unveil the three versions it will offer, including two for retail and pre-loading on new PCs, and one limited to enterprises that subscribe to Software Assurance.
Windows 8 Release Preview will be available to the public for downloading free of charge, Microsoft has previously promised.
Windows 7's RC went public on May 5, 2009, the first Tuesday of that month. If Microsoft uses the same day of the week for Windows 8, it would ship the Release Preview on Tuesday, June 5.

Microsoft detailed Metro-styled IE10 for Windows 8

The Redmond OS-giant have just detailed some of the new enhancements that will be featured on Internet Explorer 10(IE10) highlighting it’s Metro UI version. Expected this fall, the browser is set to be launched along withWindows 8 in its desktop and Metro versions. IE10 promises to provide a mush faster-fluid and safe browsing experience.
Microsoft Windows 8 with Metro IE 10
A Metro-styled IE10 will offer a faster and more fluid experience for use on touch-enabled devices. Microsoft has hidden the navigation menus and tabs in Metro IE10, allowing the web page to take up the full browser screen. The navigation controls only appear when you need them by swiping in from the top or bottom of the screen, right-clicking on a mouse, or pressing Windows key+Z on the keyboard. Other features such as an improved touch keyboard, integrated spell-check, and text search are also integrated for an enhanced browsing experience.
Metro IE10 blurs the boundaries between the web and apps through Windows 8 features like snap, charms, and site pinning. Snap allows you to browse IE10 while accessing another application side-by-side. Windows 8 charms, such as Search, Share, Devices, and Settings can be quickly accessed via the IE10 browser by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, pressing Windows key+C, or moving your mouse to the bottom- or top-right corners of the screen. And with site pinning, you can personalize your Windows Start screen with the sites you visit most.
Few more notable security features on IE10 was SmartScreen XSS filtering, Application Reputation, InPrivate browsing, Tracking Protection, and hang detection and recovery.

Nokia Windows 8 tablet in the works, confirms company's design chief

Nokia Windows 8 tablet in the works, confirms company's design chief

Rumours of Nokia prepping a Windows 8 tablet have been around for a while, but this is the first time we are hearing from a company official. Nokia's design chief Marko Ahtisaari has confirmed that the Finnish company is 'working on' a tablet and that he is spending a third of his time on the device. Ahtisaari said this in an interview with the Finnish newspaper, Kauppalehti. Ahtisaari, however, did not divulge more details about the tablet. Considering the time spent by Ahtisaari on the new device, it looks like Nokia is hoping to make a strong debut in the tablet market.
Ahtisaari's comments on the Nokia Windows 8 tablet come days after reports suggested Nokia had well moved ahead in developing a new 10.1-inch Windows 8 tablet, which will be powered by a dual-qore Qualcomm processor and is slated to launch before this year. Speculations are rife the announcement regarding the launch of the tablet will be made at Nokia's annual Nokia World event, which is slated to be held in Helsinki this year.
As said before, rumours about the Nokia tablet have hit the Internet multiple times over the last year, even as CEO Stephon Elop, said once that the company would “hold off” until it launched something really out-of-the-box. Elop pointed out that the tablet market is interesting for the company. However, he had then not given any timeframe for the launch of Nokia's first tablet. The design exec’s full interview is not yet available online though, but an excerpt at the magazine’s site hints Nokia is also working on a significant “breakthrough” in user interface.
Microsoft recently launched the consumer preview version of Windows 8 and is supposed to launch the final version by mid 2012.
