Google's entire business is based on offering the best cloud services around, so the fact that the company didn't offer a true cloud-based storage service up until now is downright odd. Certainly, you could store files in Google docs or Gmail, but without a proper desktop component to sync with them, neither was especially efficient. But with the introduction of Google Drive, the search giant has managed to give its users a place to keep their files and more, turning Drive into one of the top cloud-based storage solutions virtually overnight.

Face Recognition on Facebook Mobile?

Face.com’s CEO has shrugged off rumors that it is being acquired by Facebook for up to $100 million when asked. But the addition of its facial recognition tech to Facebook’s mobile apps could make sure friend tagging continues as the social network’s user base shifts away from desktops.
In fact, about 45% of users of Face.com’s app KLIK end up sharing their photos on Facebook, which shows how popular mobile facial recognition could be.
For the record, Face.com people are keeping their cards close to their chest. Face.com’s CEO Gil Hirsch flatly tells: “We have nothing new to announce or share at this time.”
But even while Facebook has been pushing a lot of fancy new enhancements to its mobile offerings (its Camera mobile app being the most recent) there are still a surprising number of features that have yet to be covered by the company.
So, perhaps because nature abhors a vacuum, we’re now getting a full whack of reports of what the company might buy or launch to make up for that, including today’s Face.com news that Facebook is looking to buy mobile/PC browser company Opera and hiring ex-Apple hardware engineers to work on its own phone.
We may just, quite possibly, be in the middle of a Facebook news bubble and that half of what we are reading about Facebook and mobile may never come to pass — or could take ages to come to fruition: Buffy the Android slayer is reportedly still six to 12 months away going by the timing in the AllThingsD post from November. And this is not the first time we’ve heard that Face.com is in the Facebook acquisition line.
But, if you swallow that large grain of salt, there is a huge amount of sense in the social network looking at beefing up its mobile arsenal with companies like these, which offer features that Facebook currently does not, and therefore offer the promise of getting mobile users to spend more time on the social network — something that is a concern for the company.

FB Launches Facebook Camera – An Instagram-Style Photo Filtering, Sharing, Viewing iOS App

Facebook is dead serious about mobile. Today it begins rolling out Facebook Camera for iOS to English-speaking countries, a standalone photos app where you can shoot, filter, and share single or sets of photos and scroll through a feed of photos uploaded to Facebook by your friends. Developed by Facebook’s photos team without the help of Instagram because the acquisition deal hasn’t closed yet, Facebook Camera is designed for quicker publishing than Facebook’s multi-featured primary mobile app.
Facebook Camera lets you rapidly pick one or more photos, apply filters, tag friends and locations, add a description, and post. While its 14 filters, batch uploads, and streamlined interface are a big step up from Facebook for iOS, the design isn’t as beautiful as Instagram and neither are the photos you’ll see in it. When asked if Facebook Camera would become a direct competitor to the photosharing network it bought last month, a spokesman told  “As Mark asserted, we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently, so I anticipate some healthy competition.”

God of War Ascension revealed, expected in December 2013

If you thought the saga of Kratos was over with God of War 3 think again. Rumours have been flying for quite some time now that a new God of War game is in the works.

Amazon.com has dropped the ball on Kratos and listed God of War Ascension for a December 2013 release. The game is priced at $59.99 (Rs. 3,100 approx.).

A teaser trailer too has been released along with the reveal of a box art, which however, is not yet final. The trailer doesn’t show any gameplay but has similar art direction from what we have seen in God of War 3. The narrator throughout the trailer is the familiar voice of the Titan Gaia who talks of an era long before Kratos brought down the walls of Olympus or before he became the Ghost of Sparta. We are lead to believe that God of War Ascension could be a prequel and may talk of a story arc before God of War Chains of Olympus, which is the first story if the series is looked at chronologically.

In the story arc of Kratos, we have God of War 1 and 2 for the PS2 (that were remastered for the PS3), and God of War 3 for the PS3 that concluded Kratos hell raging saga. There were 2 PSP games thrown into the mix – God of War Chains of Olympus and God of War Ghost of Sparta (both these games too have been remastered for the PS3 as well, read our God of War Collection - Volume II Review).

Microsoft's So.cl social network opens to everyone

Microsoft has silently launched its social network, So.cl, which had been in development for almost a year. The new social networking website is said to help students connect with each other.

“We expect students to continue using products such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other existing social networks, as well as Bing, Google and other search tools. We hope to encourage students to reimagine how our everyday communication and learning tools can be improved, by researching, learning and sharing in their everyday lives," says Microsoft on So.cl's FAQ page.

Pronounced as “Social”, the social network, Microsoft, says is not pitted against Facebook or Twitter. Instead, it is an addition layer to the existing social networking concept – and accepts log in via Facebook or Windows Live account.

However, So.cl is quite similar to other social media sites, as it allows users to share pages of interest, assemble montages of media, discuss on any topic. By default, all searches in So.cl are public. But users can mark their content as “private” and can delete as well. The layout looks somehow similar to Google+, also inspired from Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Rovio to launch racing-themed 'Angry Birds Heikki' in June

After slinging the upset birds at the green pigs in outer space, get ready for a new, high-speed adventure with the Angry Birds. Makers of the popular Angry Birds series, Rovio is all set for the next iteration of the game called Angry Birds Heikki. Based on F1 racing, Angry Birds Heikki is expected to release on June 18.

Details of the new game are bit sketchy, except that it will be a web-based one. Rovio says the game will have “fun Angry Birds game levels with a racing theme in addition to other bespoke content”. Rovio has partnered with Finnish Formula 1 star Heikki Kovalainen, who will also be sporting a brand new co-branded Angry Birds helmet. The Finnish game developer has also set up a website featuring Angry Birds Heikki's preview.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg marries one day after $104bn IPO

  Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wed longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan on Saturday, announcing the nuptials through a status update on the social networking site. 

The 28-year-old billionaire's wedding took place a day after Facebook's initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange on Friday.

More than 280,000 people "liked" Mr Zuckerberg's status change, which was accompanied by a photo of the smiling couple in wedding attire in a small, verdant outdoor setting with a string of lights behind them.

In the photo, the famously casual Mr Zuckerberg is wearing a dark blue suit and tie, a departure from his trademark "hoodie," while Ms Chan has on a sleeveless white dress with lace overlay.

The pair wed in an intimate backyard ceremony in Palo Alto, California, according to People magazine.

The couple had planned the exchange of vows for four months, but surprised their guests, who thought they were to celebrate Chan's recent graduation from medical school, the magazine reported.

Mr Zuckerberg's sister, Arielle Zuckerberg, posted, "Balls. Now I'm the only unmarried Zuckerberg..." on her Facebook page. She is listed by Chan as a family member on the site.
Mr Zuckerberg designed a simple ruby wedding ring for Chan himself, People reported. Guests dined on food from the couple's favorite restaurants, and nibbled on mouse-shaped chocolates that the pair ate on their first date nine years ago.
Tim Carvell, lead writer for "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, reacted to the news on Twitter, writing: "Congratulations, Mark Zuckerberg! As a gift, I got you the names of all my friends, a list of my favorite movies, and some photos of me!"

How to lock a Folder using Notepad

Everyone of us have some private files on systems which we do not want others to access them. Some hide those files on computer and some others use software to password protect them. But using a software leads to many problems like, getting system hang, also when we format our system the software will be removed automatically which causes your protected files to be public.
So , it is good to password protect a file on computer using a simple notepad trick by using .BAT extension.

• In the above program I am using ray as the password of the file.
• Replace it with anything you like to make it as folder password.
• Save the file anywhere in the system with a .bat suffix like  something.bat
• Here I am saving it as mylocker.bat on my system.

• Double click on the something.bat file which you create, a new folder by name Locker will be created on the same location of bat file you saved.
• Copy your files to this folder and open bat file again and type y and then enter to lock your folder.

• To unlock your file again, you need to open the bat file and enter your password.

Google+ ups competition with Facebook by including teens

Google+ adds safeguards to help protect teenagers on social net, Hangouts

Google is widening the potential user base for Google+ by lowering the age requirement from 18 to 13 years old -- a move that could help it grow in Facebook's shadow.

Last week, Bradley Horowitz, vice president of product at Google+, announced the change in a blog post. He noted that Google wants to help teens share with their friends, while also helping them keep from over-sharing, especially with strangers.
"Teens and young adults are the most active Internet users on the planet," wrote Horowitz. "And surprise, surprise: they're also human beings who enjoy spending time with friends and family. Put these two things together and it's clear that teens will increasingly connect online."
Teens were allowed onto the site immediately.

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, noted that by opening up the social network to younger users, Google+ is instantly widening its potential user base. And with an estimated 62 million users now, Google+ still has a long way to go to catch up with Facebook, which has a reported 800 million users.

"This will help Google+ add more users to the site and that's important right now," said Gottheil. "Facebook has a lot of younger users. That's how they got their start. This just makes sense for Google+."
Right now, Facebook requires that users be at least 13 years old to join the social network. However, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckeberg said last year that he'd like to lower that minimum age limit. While he wasn't actively working on that issue at the time, he said he'd like to study it more.
Horowitz pointed out in his blog post that Google+ is adding security safeguards to help protect teens that might be joining the site.
"The difference between friends, acquaintances and strangers is a crucial one -- especially for teens," he wrote. "Google+ includes circles to help people manage their different relationships, but we're going a step further for our younger users."
Horowitz explained that with Google+, teens can share privately with their circles or publicly with the world. "Posting something for everyone to see is a big deal, however, so when teens try and share outside their circles, we encourage them to think before they post," he added.
Google+ is set up by default to only allow people in teens' circles to contact them and it's designed features that enable teens to block someone with just one or two clicks.
Google also is setting up special rules around Google+ Hangouts.
"Google+ Hangouts bring people together using live multi-person video, and the results range from heartwarming to awe-inspiring," wrote Horowitz. "However, we recognize that connecting face-to-face is special and serious, so if a stranger outside a teen's circles joins the Hangout, we temporarily remove the young adult, and give them a chance to rejoin."
The social network also just set up the Google+ Safety Center, where it details the new safeguards.

 

Is Google+ or Facebook better for business?

Facebook has head start, but Google+ could find enterprise niche with key adds

Ever since Google came out with Google+ Pages for business on Monday, the company has taken heat for not giving enterprises basic tools with this initial offering.

And while industry analysts think Google+ could find a lucrative niche in the social networking world among enterprise users, for now there's a sense that Facebook may be outdoing Google+ when it comes to giving businesses a place to reach customers.
"I think Google has been trying to strike a balance between responding quickly to one big market demand -- support for business presence on Google+ -- versus bringing a fully-fleshed-out offering to the market," said Ray Valdes, an analyst with Gartner. "They are choosing not to wait until Google+ is fully decked out with important but secondary features, such as multi-admin support, account transfers, and audio file support.
"In this fast-moving sector, Google does not have the luxury of waiting until a full-featured offering is ready," added Valdes.

Actually, there's quite a list of features that Google+ Pages doesn't have right now, including the ability for businesses to offer deals or coupons, as well as the ability to host contests or sweepstakes. Businesses on Google+ Pages also can't sell products.
Many of these features are available on Facebook and now users want them on Google+.
Soon after Google execs in July asked businesses to hold off creating Google+ pages until the network was ready for them, Facebook released Facebook for Business , which basically is a guide to walk businesses through the process of using Facebook features like deals, social plug-ins and ads.
Facebook made it clear that it was going after enterprises and their online time and took advantage of the delay for Google+ Pages. Now, several months later, analysts say it's clear Google+ still needs more work.
According to Valdes, Google+ Pages is a good start and the company will fill out its offering in the coming months.
"Although Google is getting some criticism for gaps in the feature set, and things that perhaps should have been better thought out, I think that they likely would have gotten more heat for not responding at all to the need for business pages on Google+," he said. "Facebook has a more complete offering at the moment, but this is a fast-moving situation. Google and Facebook are not mutually exclusive choices. Many businesses have a blog, and a Twitter feed, and a Facebook page already, and now some portion of those will add a Google+ Page."
In Google's favor: many businesses are just now diving into the social networking, which will give the company some time to get its act together, said Hadley Reynolds, an analyst with IDC. "[Businesses] will clearly welcome a Google offering and a Google audience," he added. "So Google has time to take Pages through the revisions and additions process required to make the program truly usable and valuable."
